Lost kind of big on Atlas Resource Partners but that is how it goes. I knew buying into them they had a lot of debt and that was a risk. I don’t agree on how they handled it by creating a new company but I didn’t have enough shares to change that decision either so it was time to go. Better to get out now than to hold on and add insult to injury by incurring a tax penalty.

On the positive side the dividends continue to rise. I am well over my $65 estimated average per month and a staggering 64% increase comparing this month to last year.

May is usually a down month for dividends but it was a little bit harsher due to the fact that ARP (Atlas Resource Partners) cut their dividend and in so doing sharply plummeted (double whammy). If oil prices recover so should they, but at this point it is going to be a long road. My guess is the company executives are driving it down so they can take it over cheaper under a new ticker symbol.

I also got a letter this month from my 457K my T. Rowe Income Fund and wanted to change my money over to some Great-West general fund. That is the one thing that annoys me the most about my 457K plan. First of all, the selections on what you can invest in are very small and then they keep changing them to other options that have higher fees. It feels like a sham. Anyhow, I moved the money I had in that fund to a different T. Rowe Price Dividend Growth fund. I am hoping that works out. It is a little bit more aggressive than the income fund was, but it is still very conservative compared to my trading accounts.

In good news despite the dividend cut by ARP, my dividends grew 6.83% over this time last year. I am adding funds in June, so I should see more growth soon. This is the advantage of a balanced portfolio. Even if one of your stocks gets jolted, the rest will help you keep growing.

Sold shares of the following companies:
NMM (Navios Maritime Holdings)

This month I took a loss in selling NMM (Navios Maritime Holdings). In addition to owning NMM I used to own FREE (FreeSeas Inc.). I sold out of that stock awhile ago as I saw an oversupply in the market along with the inability to repair their ships in an expeditious manner. At that time I kept NMM on the hope that they would secure new credit and maybe address the issue of oversupply in the market. While I was hopeful when it secured a line of credit from NNA, it did not disclose any significant details regarding the credit line. This is tempered by the fact that NMM is currently yielding a 85% dividend. This is simply unsustainable. The dry goods shipping market may see some improvement in 2017, but it is doubtful that NMM will benefit from that market turnaround. Due to that reasoning I felt it was necessary to reallocate capital.

Most of the reallocation was in REITs. I have gained lately from REITs and though the stock prices have swung widely the dividend portion has been steady.

The sky is falling! The sky is falling! Saudia Arabia has gone mad!! Oil prices may never come back again… yeah right I say. All I smell is blood in the water and unfortunately someone’s lose can be my gain. I don’t know if the market is going lower, but I am staying the course. I still have several years to invest into this market.

My main concern is raising up my dividends and in that I think I am doing a great job. I am 262% over this month last year. I wish I got that kind of a raise at work!. Granted my $68 dollars isn’t going to pay many bills but every month that adds up.

As you can see I am adding a little bit more into the realty market. I think on the short term basis I am playing with fire. I do think we are heading toward a bubble, but long term I should be OK.

I am a little bit low on capital these days due to my wife needing a tooth implant so I will not be able to buy as many stocks as I would like, but if a good deal comes up I will be ready with a little bit of cash in reserves.

OK, so the year of dividend accumulation is in and December paid off big time!! If I could get $2,093.10 on a monthly basis right now I would quit my full-time job and go live in some third world country like a king. Unfortunately, that is not going to happen, but it is fun to think “What if?”

The other funny thing is that if you have been following this blog for any amount of time you will notice that December accounts for over two-thirds of the total yearly dividends. Speaking of year dividends, the total for the year is $2,918.12 in dividend income. That translates into $243 of monthly income. Breaking it down even further, it comes down to about $8.10 a day. So I thought it would be interesting to look at different income levels and see where I could live now on that money, this is what I found (the number represents the average monthly income for that country):
1) Bosnia and Herzegovina — $7.96

I told my wife about this list and she just laughed, but it is good to know we have options. It is also crazy to think that over half of all the world is living on less than $243 a month. I am truly blessed to live in a country where I have not only the opportunity to make an honest living, but to grow that wealth. All in my own way and in my own time.

Unfortunately for me OPEC is still battling for control of the market and thus crude oil prices continue to go lower. I have heard that in the mid-west gas prices are as low as $1.70 a gallon. Here in California prices remain at a $2.70 average. To make matters worse ARP recently announced a dividend cut. That was not fun.

For the good news I got $2.50 more in dividends than I did last month. Last November I earned $11.58 in dividends. That is a 405% increase in dividends! Not too shabby.

Unless something tragic happens I should definitely get over my goal of $500 in dividends for the year. The wildcard for me is my 457K account. If the dividends there are good enough I might even go over $600. Either way it is going to be a record for me.

As the news likes to say “there is a lot of volatility in the market.” As you can I am still adding to my current position with no sales. My short term adding strategy seems to be off but the great thing about stocks is you don’t need to be that accurate. Unless of course you are a day trader, but I am long so I am good. On the long term view I am a bit of a contrarian right now. Oil is really low right now with an over supply coming from the Middle East, but that can’t last forever. My analysis says we will see more short term pain in share price, but that I believe will create an opportunity for future dividend growth.
