Mexican State Capitols: Chetumal, Quintana Roo
Date Visited: 10/7/2020
The state of Quintana Roo is kind of like two states. The northern part of Quintana Roo is the more popular side of Quintana Roo. Cancun is the most populous city of the state and is a high end tourist destination for people all over the world. I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I really did not like Cancun. The all inclusive resorts are just not my speed. I like the white sand beaches, but there is only so much time I can dedicate to sitting on a beach. I need a little variety in my life.
South of Akumal in Quintana Roo is a very different feel. The jungle takes over the south of Quintana Roo and you get a much more authentic carribean vibe. You can find restaurants where the fish were alive just a few hours ago. The hotel rooms will be basic, but only a fraction of the price that you will find in the North. The beaches are more natural, filled with mangroves, which mean less sand, but also means less seaweed. As an added bonus you also get to see pristine Mayan archeological sites that get very few visitors.
