two speeds! what a clever baby

AJ has figured out reverse. When climbing the stairs he can back up, feeling for each new step with his foot. Also, the other day, he was on our bed. He tried to get down by leaning over the edge of his bed and feeling for the floor with his hand. After several re-adjustments he still couldn’t reach the floor with his hand. So, he turned around and slid down backwards off the bed (on his belly). He did land feet first, but his feet didn’t hold him. He promptly landed, thump, on his bum. This didn’t bother him one bit and moved on quickly to where he wanted to go. So, AJ now has full steam ahead (on all fours) and reverse, what a clever baby.

Merry Christmas!

Well, our Christmas is turning out to be a bit interesting. We started the festivities yesterday with a Mexican Tradition. Tamales!! It is all about the gooey wonder known as Maseca!! AJ enjoyed them alot:
<%image(20081225-Christmas08 033web.jpg|448|336|AJ's Favorite was Queso Blanco con Chile Verde.)%> The funny part was AJ’s favorite was the spiciest (he’s got that Mexican blood running in him after all). Well, then we went to bed while the presents piled near the chimney (the chimney that doesn’t have a guard in front of it so we use a bookcase to cover the flume). <%image(20081225-Christmas08 039web.jpg|448|336|I love the Santa hat light.)%> AJ of course was the first up this morning. <%image(20081225-Christmas08041web.jpg|448|336|What's the matter with you sleepy heads?)%> The haul was good. Of particular interest was a ball popper and funny hats. <%image(20081225-christmashatsweb.jpg|448|336|Thank you Aunt Judy (Jacobs) for the hats.)%><%image(20081225-chballpopper.JPG|448|336|Thank you Gramps and Grandma Jackman.)%>
Unfortunately, we were supposed to go to my mom’s (Janet) house, but she was sick. Poor AJ didn’t get to deliver his presents. <%image(20081225-Christmas08 042web.jpg|448|336|AJ wants to deliver his presents.)%>

Oh and lest Denise think she got away from being in any picture I am including this one we took at Knott’s last Saturday.
<%image(20081225-Christmas08 013web.jpg|448|336|AJ had the best seat for the Christmas parade at Knott's)%>

It is raining here in Crestline so we went to San Bernardino (it was raining there too) and went to the Lotus Garden (Chinese food) and had fried rice, chicken, beef, and wontons.

Happy Birthday AJ!

“It’s been a great first year. Today we’re going to Disneyland, and we’ll add some of the pictures from there to this space. For now here are some of my favorites from our recent trip to Aunt Sara’s and Uncle Guy’s in the Sacramento area:

<%image(20081206-184.JPG|336|448|)%>
On Friday, among other things, we went to the California State Railroad Musuem. AJ doesn’t seem too impressed!

<%image(20081206-201.JPG|448|336|)%>
Saturday we started the day by going to the Empire Star Mine, also a state park. Here we are at the mine owners house.

<%image(20081206-206.JPG|448|336|)%>
AJ was facinated by all the belts running in the machine shop of the mine.

<%image(20081206-219.JPG|448|336|)%>
Later that day we went to a little tiny local RR musuem. He had just taken a nap, and we got some great pictures.

<%image(20081206-228.JPG|448|336|)%>
Finally, here is a picture of AJ and his great-grandma Frieda. She is in her 80s and suffering from dementia, so this experiance wasn’t very meaningful for her (or him), but we do have the pictures for posterity.”

New Trick and a New Food…

“<%image(20081122-002a.jpg|286|448|null)%>

So, obviously, AJ is pulling himself up now. He’s been doing it for a couple of weeks or so. (And also, obviously, I had some exposure issues with the camera!) He’s not yet “”cruising”” very well, that is walking, holding on to furniture. He will walk along the side of our bed, for a step or two, tummy to the bed. He’s nowhere near walking with only one hand for balance.

AJ has also discovered a new favorite food, apple cores!! Applesauce is nothing new, but this was AJ’s first experience with “”real”” apples. Saturday morning when I was eating an apple, he was reaching for it. So, when I was done, I handed him the core. He gnawed on it for quite a while (like 10 minutes–an eternity in baby time). I had already thrown the apple core away before I thought to take a picture, so I handed him an apple slice. He gnawed for a minute or two, long enough for the pictures, but he was not nearly as interested in the slice as he was in the nice round core. Here are the results of our photo shoot, where you can also see him reaching for me

(Note: this entry was actually created the morning we went to the Graber Olive house, but I didn’t quite finish before we left. Then the pictures disapeared into the depth of the computer. Now I’ve recovered the photos, and abbra-ca-dabra… my blog entry.)

Casa de Olivo (aka The Graber House)

“Well, our adventure this Saturday started by us trying to find a place called the Rains house (the oldest house in Rancho Cucamonga), but when we found it, it was closed. So we traveled down route 66 (insert song here) and ended up in Rialto. In historic Rialto we found this free regional museum called the Cooper Museum. A very nice, but very small museum (but it was free!). They gave us cookies and told us we should go to the Graber house in Ontario. On the way to the Graber house we found the Ontario Historical Museum (it was free too, but we donated $5 dollars for the three of us). They had a permanent exhibit dedicated to the roadways of America and two temporary exhibits (dia del los muertos, and “”Hey, what’s going on?!””–the Vietnam War). Then it was off to the Graber House. The Graber house was established in 1894 and is one of the oldest canners of cured olives. So we went there and we took the factory tour and tasted some really yummy gourmet olive samples. We ended up buying a can of size 16 olives (biggest olives I have ever seen). Also, when we were there, the Vette club was in town, so that was cool to me (John). In all it was a great day, not exactly how we planned it, but it was fun.

Fighting Spam

“Unlike most blogs I run this one by myself, under my own domain. I am experimenting with a new CAPTCHA program. It requires you to enter in the letters and numbers before you can post to my blog. I am hoping this will help in my fight against the continual spam post comments I have been getting lately (I deleted over 1000 in the last few days). If you are reading this post (and your not a spam poster), can you do me a favor and post a short comment (I am curious to see if it works ok)?

Thanks,

John”

Today I Got a Commendation!

Today I got a Commander’s Commendation! As a civilian in a Police Department this is one of the best awards you can get. I got it for my work on Online Reporting. You can also visit the Riverside Department’s website by going to www.riversideca.gov/rpd (but don’t file a false report that is a misdemeanor).”

John, AJ, and Thomas the Train.

<%image(20081117-Thomas08Passweb.jpg|104|148|null)%>For those that maybe don’t know I am a Volunteer Member of the Orange Empire Railway Museum. It is a museum dedicated to the preservation of Railroading. The museum is primarily dedicated for streetcars, but we have a lot of trains including some trains that were in various films. Anyhow, the last two weekends were our “”Day Out with Thomas”” days. I was a Thomas helper (a conductor for Thomas), Denise and AJ helped out in the Activity tent (where the toys, stamps, and coloring pages were). Fun stuff.
