AJ and Knotts

Snoopy

Snoopy

Normally we go to Disneyland, but thanks to a generous offer by Cedar Fair Parks we went to Knott’s. Basically, every year at this time Cedar Fair Parks gives free admission to Law Enforcement. So for the $12 it cost us for parking we went. I have to say I am now in a bit of a dilema in that it seems that AJ liked Knott’s more than Disneyland. I am not sure if it is because he is too used to Disneyland (he has been there since he was 6 weeks old), or if it is because he is more of a thrill ride guy. At any rate we are scheduled to go to Disneyland on the 5th so I will definately be comparing AJs reaction. In the meantime have fun with our customary pictures of AJ…

Oh and Denise I thought it was very funny that Knott’s had a complete store dedicated to Disney merchandise at Knott’s, I guess if it sells it is ok??

Surreal Church Experience

Despite a long family background in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, I didn’t join the Church until I was 18 yrs old. My grandfather on my mother’s side was a member of the church but became inactive when he was young. I really didn’t learn about any of my family’s background in the Church until I was baptized.
I mention this because despite my years of studying the gospel and serving in many callings (the favorite of which was my mission in Argentina), I have never been able to escape that feeling of being just “a convert.” Don’t get me wrong, I love being a convert to the gospel, but there is definately something to be said to being able to have the opportunity to be a part of the Church from “day one.”
I often wonder what it would of been like to have grown up in the Church. I look at AJ sometimes and wonder what it would of been like to act out “Once I was a Snowman.” Would I have ever gotten to stand up at the podium to recieve my certificate for memorizing all of the Articles of Faith? I look at my Teachers getting their first dance card and think “could I have gotten one?” I don’t know the answers to any of those questions, but I wonder.
On the other hand there are things I don’t have to wonder about. For example, I will never be acused of just following my parent’s religious views. I knew and studied all the “fine print” before I became a member of this Church. I got to study Gospel Essentials for a whole year before going to my first Gospel Doctorine Class. When I went on my mission I knew exactly what the people I was teaching was feeling and I knew exactly what to say to them.
Today I went to church in Salt Lake City, it was a very surreal experience for me. I knew I was supposed to be there, but at the same time I felt out of place. It definately wasn’t my home ward. I think this was because it seemed like everyone I spoke to had some important post with the Church. Denise and I sat down for Gospel Doctorine class and the Second Counselor to the General Young Women’s Presidency sat next to us. Our teacher was a First Quorem of the Seventy Member. I guess general authorities have to go to church somewhere, but I guess some where in the back of my head I had this vision of all these people holding some super sacrament service in some temple somewhere (they have 13 to chose from!), I didn’t ever expect to be in one with them. Definately a different experience, I don’t write notes too often during Sunday School, but today I did.

Beam me up Librarian.

As a family we like to read books, but we have a small house. For this reason alone libraries are very important for our family. Crestline is a very nice little town in that we are very community oriented. The biggest thing in town these days is the new library. It is a very prominent piece of metal, in a town that has very little metal (most things in our town are made out of wood).

Lot of metal within a lot of trees.

Thanks to an invite by our local librarian Janette we were able to sign one of the support beams. It was basically a fund raising event for the library. After signing the beam we were served a little breakfast. In all it was a nice event and a good way to see all of our neighbors.

Happy Birthday Mom!

My mom is a very smart lady.

She is soo smart that she was born on a day that everyone would celebrate her birthday. On Wednesday, November 11, we took advantage of Disneyland’s free birthday offer and went to Disneyland with my Mom and my sister Amy. It was a very fun day. We rode many attractions and even got to see the new show called Tiana’s Show Boat Jubilee, which is basically a big advertisment for Disney’s The Princess and the Frog (which we were probably going to see regardless of this new Disney show).

For being a holiday, the park wasn’t too crowded. We of course used the “JohnnyP Refuses to Wait in Line for Anything” technique. It involves a convuluted system of fastpass collecting and zig zagging through the park, lots of walking, but no waiting.
AJ is getting better at the Carousel, here is a little video (my sister needs a bit more practice):

He didn’t understand trick-or-treating at first, but he soon learned how to say “dink dink” and “dink do” and got 2 bags worth of candy.
At church we had a Halloween party. For some reason Denise didn’t get dressed up at all:

Just as well, I didn’t get a costume either. I just helped decorate a door.

BoBo’s Pizza

bobos_pizzaThis Friday we went to BoBo’s Pizza on 40th in San Bernardino, California. I found out about this place on the back of a receipt from Stater Brothers. They were offering a medium cheese pizza for $3.49. Extra toppings were one dollar, we got mushrooms. The pizza place wasn’t that great. It lacked decor and you can only take out your pizza (no delivery service). The pizza however was really good, I really liked the sauce and the crust was just the right thickness. With tax it came out to $4.89. A really good deal for the price. If your interested in trying it you can call them at 909-882-5995.

BTW, I have no affliation with BoBo’s and don’t know anyone working there, nor was I given any compensation for this review.

How to make Tonkatsu (Japanese Porkchops)

Itadakimasu!! Japanese Porkchops!

I have this wierd thing where I like to watch youtube videos of people cooking foreign foods and then I try to make the recipes at home. This week I made Tonkatsu which is Japanese Porkchops. The recipe as you will see is really easy and it came out really good! I found the Tonkatsu sauce at an asian grocery store in Riverside, CA. You can also use Housin (Chinese BBQ sauce) if you can’t find Tonkatsu sauce.

Pumkin Bumpkins…

Another Saturday rolled by and we had yet another day of weekend adventures. Looking for some cheap, yet fun things to do, we set off for Yucaipa and Oak Glen.
Our first stop was a trip back in time to the old Yucaipa Adobe. Oral history (as given by the interpreter giving our tour) says that it was 1842 home built by Diego Sepulveda. The archaeologists and the San Bernardino County Museum Association (the owners of the adobe) say it was built in 1858 by James Waters. Add to this the fact that the Dunlap family owned this adobe from 1869 to 1950 and you get a really old mud house with lots of history. In this small house you will find an old organ, LDS pioneer furniture, and a kitty cat who apparently likes to live under the foundation (I was told he was for gopher control). It was a fun little stop and for the $2 per person suggested donation it was really cheap.

This is a lot of mud papi!

Yep, it's made out of mud Denise.

pumpkinactivitieswebOur next stop was to the Live Oak Pumpkin Patch and Christmas Tree Yard. This modest farm on the side of the 10 freeway provides for a cheesy roadside attraction of epic proportions. Parking, music, and a giant hay stack castle are free. Everything else is not, but it is still fun to look. The pumpkins are priced by size and range from $2 to $20 dollars. There are several attractions that will cost you tickets that are a dollar a piece. For 1 ticket you can buy a handshake with a monkey, for 4 tickets you can walk through an old fashion corn maze, and for the coupé tat you can ride a tired pony in a circle for 6 tickets (ok, so I didn’t do that one). We didn’t actually buy anything, we just had fun looking.

welcomeoakwebNext we went to the Parrish Pioneer Apple Farm in Oak Glen. It has been an operating apple orchard since the 1870s, but has now evolved into a massive road side attraction. While there you can see many different kinds of apples. The prices vary, but are not that expensive (the smallest quantity was a 6 pound bag for $8 dollars). You can also buy every sort of apple product imaginable: ciders, jams, apple butter, etc. If you can think of a product made with apples, they have it. In addition to the gift shops and the apples there are some other notable things to see. When we were there they had an old fashion country yodeler. They also have a zoo with an assorted cast of animals. Lastly, the original Parrish Adobe Home built in 1875 by Enoch Parrish still stands. Again there was a lot to buy, but we managed to get by without spending anything. Parking was free and they even let us try a bit of a gala apple.

The most expensive part of our day happened at El Pollo Loco when we bought some chicken and ice cream. Yes, we are cheap, but we still have fun!

Farmer’s Market LA Style

farmer'slogoThis weekend we went and visited Denise’s brother in LA and we took a little excursion to the Grove and the LA Farmer’s Market. The grove is a trendy outdoor mall area with all of the usual mall type restaurants. When we were there they were filming a commercial for Guitar Hero. I guess they are making a portable version for the Nintendo DS system, because that is what they were using. I don’t play many video games so it wasn’t that interesting to me. Denise went to a cooking store and bought a bunch of mini-loaf holders that she plans to use for Christmas gifts. AJ of course had a knack for finding every potential scar inducing device in the store.
The Farmer’s Market was really interesting. I first learned about the LA Market from an episode of California’s Gold. It once was a big gas station and it is now celebrating its 75th anniversary. It is very interesting in that it has lots of little booths you can go and look at. On the episode of California’s Gold I learned about this Singapore food place that served food on banana leaves so we went there. I had the medium spicy level noodles called mee-goreng and they were just at my tolerance level, I don’t want to imagine what normal or high spicy would be.
mee-goreng
Denise bought some really good peaches. Fruit has been a hard thing for me to buy these days. Ever since I have discovered farmer’s markets I only want really ripe fruit. It makes a really big difference when the fruit is allowed to grow to its full duration. The only problem is that the fruit at farmer’s markets is expensive and so I don’t get to eat it that much.
Also in LA we went to this little Japanese strip mall for yogurt and at the market I bought some Japanese soda called Pocari Sweat and Calpico. Here is what AJ thought of it:
